Just as the second generation had rapidly grown in a few years, it also rapidly diminished in a few years. In 1924 the KKK peaked at 6 million members, and just 6 years later, in 1930, there were approximately thirty thousand members left. This rapid decline was very much due to external opposition bringing a downfall to the main leaders of the KKK for crimes committed with association to the KKK. This decline continued until 1944, when the KKK was temporarily disbanded, and the second generation ended.
